Nr. 26 | How much? How tall? How heavy?

Pre-schoolers already have a grasp of mathematics. They eagerly discover numbers, shapes, patterns, weights and sizes in their everyday surroundings through play. The skills they acquire in the process will subsequently help them understand maths as they move up the school ladder. Papperlapapp No. 26 addresses this topic – sometimes with a note of tension, but also with sensitivity.

Our first story gets off to a salty start, being set on the high seas. Captain Hook is navigating the wild waves with her children and an entire crew of sailors. At any rate until they drop anchor at an island where there is treasure to be found. Want to know a secret? On a treasure hunt like this, it always helps to have an idea about counting and calculating as well as about different shapes and weights.

Ladybirds are inherently good at counting – after all, they do have spots on their wings. However – at least in our story – they are also quite vain. In our second story, entitled Spot on, Max is flying to a competition Marili has organised for her ladybird friends when something unexpected happens: a new ladybird called Mark swoops down out of nowhere. He has a huge number of spots on his back, far more than Max has. Max begins to compete for Marili’s favour. Will he manage to get over his vanity regarding his wing spots and meet up with Mark without being jealous of him?

The activity page encourages children to make a bracelet out of beads, which also helps them practise counting up to ten. The brainteasers focus on measuring and comparing. The hidden object game shows a colourful city full of numbers.
